Is Artificial Turf Safe for Dogs?

Pet-grade turf is safe, antimicrobial, and easier on dogs than most McKinney backyards. Here's what "pet-safe" actually means and the three specs to insist on.
Short answer: yes. Modern pet-grade artificial turf is safe for dogs, easier on their paws than concrete, and significantly more sanitary than the muddy, urine-burned natural grass it usually replaces. The longer answer is that not all turf is built the same — there are three specs you need to insist on if it's going in a yard with dogs.
Why pet turf is safer than the alternative
Most McKinney backyards with dogs end up as one of three things: a mud pit, a urine-burned patch, or a brown August moonscape. All three are harder on a dog's paws and gut than a properly installed pet turf:
- No mud — paws stay clean, your floors stay clean.
- No urine burn spots — pet turf drains urine straight through the backing into the base.
- No pesticides — you stop spraying weed killer and fertilizer the day it's installed.
- No fleas in dead grass — turf doesn't host them the way thatch does.
The three pet-safe specs
1. Antimicrobial infill (this is the big one)
Standard sand infill traps urine and starts to smell. Antimicrobial-coated infill — Envirofill, T°Cool, or equivalent — kills the bacteria that cause odor and lasts the life of the turf. We use it on every pet install in McKinney. Don't accept a cheaper sand-only quote.
2. High-flow backing (40+ inches/hr)
Cheaper turf backings drain at 10–20 in/hr. Pet-grade backing drains 40+ in/hr so dog urine sheets through instead of pooling on top. This is what keeps the yard from smelling after a year of use.
3. Non-toxic blades
All major U.S. turf manufacturers we install are lead-free and meet CPSIA standards for children's products. Your dog can chew it, lick it, and roll on it — non-toxic. Avoid no-name turf shipped from overseas where we can't verify the spec.
What about heat?
Turf does run hotter than natural grass in direct McKinney summer sun. Cool-tech blades drop surface temps 15–20°F, and a 30-second hose spray drops them another 30–40°F. Treat it like a hot patio — if it's too hot for you to walk barefoot, give it a spray or wait for shade. Full breakdown in our Texas heat article.
Cleaning routine for dog owners
- Pick up solid waste like you would on natural grass — every day or two.
- Hose down high-use spots weekly in summer, monthly the rest of the year.
- Once a quarter, mix a 1:1 water/distilled white vinegar spray and rinse the high-traffic zones. Done.
Every pet turf install we do in McKinney includes antimicrobial infill, 40+ in/hr drainage backing, and a power-broom finish. We won't install pet turf any other way — it's not worth your money or your dog's comfort.
