Turf isn't zero-maintenance — it's low-maintenance. Here's the exact routine that keeps a McKinney install looking new for 20 years.

Artificial turf isn't zero-maintenance — anyone telling you that is selling. It's low-maintenance: 15 minutes a week and an hour a season keeps a McKinney install looking new for two decades. Here's the exact routine.

Weekly (5–10 minutes)

  • Pick up solid pet waste, same as natural grass.
  • Blow off leaves, grass clippings from your neighbor's mower, and other debris.
  • Rinse high-pet-use zones with the hose in summer.

Monthly (15–20 minutes)

  • Walk the perimeter and check the edges — anywhere turf meets a flowerbed, walkway, or fence. Spot any movement or lifting early.
  • Pull any windblown weeds that have rooted in the infill (rare, but possible). Hand-pull, no chemicals needed.
  • Hose down the full surface in summer to flush dust and pollen.

Seasonal (1 hour, twice a year)

  • Spring: Power-broom the entire lawn to stand the blades back up after winter compaction. We rent these out at cost to past clients or do it for $150–$250.
  • Fall: Blow off all leaves before they get wet and matted. Wet leaves left on turf for weeks can stain the blades.

Pro tasks (every 3–5 years)

  • Top up infill in high-traffic zones. As the blades flex over the years, infill settles and packs down. Adding 1–2 lbs/sq ft to worn areas restores blade support.
  • Inspect and re-glue any seam edges that have started to lift. Cheap fix if caught early.
  • Deep-clean with an enzyme-based pet odor cleaner if pet areas need a refresh.

What NOT to do

  • Don't use a metal rake — it tears fibers. Plastic-tine power broom or stiff bristle broom only.
  • Don't pressure-wash on the highest setting — it can blow out infill. Garden hose pressure or low-PSI pressure wash only.
  • Don't use bleach or harsh solvents — they can degrade the fiber UV coating.
  • Don't park a vehicle on it. Even a riding mower is too much point-load.
  • Don't let gasoline, motor oil, or pool chemicals sit on it. Rinse immediately if spilled.
The McKinney summer test

If you can walk your turf barefoot at 7pm in July without thinking about it, you're maintaining it correctly. If it feels matted, dusty, or smells faintly, you're due for a hose-down and a power-broom.
